Today, we mostly think of honey as a natural sweetener for our tea or oatmeal. However, in classical Islamic Medicine (Tibb-e-Nabawi), honey is considered a foundational pillar of health. It is a food, a drink, a sweet, a preservative, and a potent medicine all rolled into one.
While the Quran explicitly states that in honey “there is healing for mankind” (Surah An-Nahl 16:69), the practical, medical application of honey by the Prophet Muhammad (ļ·ŗ) reveals profound insightsāespecially when it comes to gut health and digestion.
“Your Brother’s Stomach Has Lied”
There is a famous incident narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (R.A) that perfectly illustrates the medical philosophy of Tibb-e-Nabawi.
A man came to the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) in distress, saying that his brother was suffering from a severe stomach ache and diarrhea (dysentery). The Prophet (ļ·ŗ) simply prescribed: “Give him honey to drink.”
The man went away and administered the honey, but soon returned, complaining, “I gave him honey to drink, but it increased his diarrhea!” The Prophet (ļ·ŗ) told him to go back and give him more honey. The man returned a third and fourth time with the exact same complaintāthe honey seemed to be making it worse!
With absolute certainty, the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) replied: “Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother’s stomach has lied.” The man went back, administered more honey, and finally, his brother was completely cured.
The Medical Wisdom: Why Did It Get Worse First?
To the modern mind, continuing a treatment that temporarily worsens symptoms sounds counterintuitive. However, classical Islamic physicians explain the brilliant physiological wisdom behind this Prophetic interaction:
- The Ultimate Gut Cleanser: Diarrhea and stomach aches are often caused by viscous, sticky waste matter clinging to the villi (tiny hair-like folds) on the walls of the stomach and intestines.
- The Detox Effect: Honey acts as a powerful, natural detergent for the digestive tract. When the patient drank the initial doses of honey, it began aggressively breaking down and flushing out this massive amount of toxic matter, which temporarily increased the diarrhea.
- The Importance of Dosage: The initial doses were simply not enough to clear out the sheer volume of illness. The Prophet (ļ·ŗ) understood that the treatment wasn’t failing; it was actively working! By insisting on repeated doses, the required medicinal threshold was finally met, the stomach walls were washed completely clean, and the patient recovered.
The “Trustworthy Preserver” and Cure-All
Classical physicians were in awe of honey. Because it never spoils and preserves whatever is placed inside it, historical texts refer to it as the “Trustworthy Preserver.” They recorded that if fresh meat was completely submerged in honey, it would remain fresh for up to three months, and fruits could be preserved for six months!
Beyond the gut, classical texts document a massive list of health benefits for honey:
- Memory & Phlegm: Licking honey on an empty stomach cuts through excess phlegm and acts as a natural memory enhancer.
- Organ Support: It has highly beneficial effects on clearing blockages in the liver, kidneys, and bladder.
- Hair & Skin: When used externally as an ointment, it eliminates lice and leaves hair long, beautiful, and soft.
- Oral Health: Historically, it was rubbed on the gums and teeth to make them white, shiny, and safe from disease.
How to Apply the Sunnah
The most effective way to consume honey, according to the practice of the Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ), is to mix it with water and drink it on an empty stomach in the morning. Warm honey water acts as a gentle flush for the digestive system, gently warming the stomach, clearing out overnight waste, and preparing the body for the day. As the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) advised: “Make sure to use two healing things: honey and the Quran.” (Sunan Ibn Majah).
Next time your stomach feels upset, before reaching for heavy medications, consider trusting the Prophetic wisdom. Mix a spoonful of pure, raw honey into a glass of warm water, and let this ancient medicine do its healing work.
