In today’s world, the skincare industry is worth billions, with countless creams, serums, and spot treatments promising to banish breakouts overnight. But long before modern dermatology, classical Islamic Medicine (Tibb-e-Nabawi) offered a remarkably gentle, effective, and beautifully holistic approach to treating skin blemishes, pimples, and boils.
The Prophetic method teaches us that true healing always involves a combination of the physical and the spiritual. Letās explore a beautiful historical incident that reveals the perfect Prophetic remedy for a simple pimple.
A Beautiful Incident of Prophetic Care
Ibn al-Sunni recorded a touching narration from one of the pure wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ļ·ŗ). She narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ) came to her and noticed a pimple on her finger.
Instead of ignoring it, he (ļ·ŗ) actively offered a medical and spiritual remedy. He asked her, “Do you have Dharirah?” When she replied that she did, he instructed her to apply it directly to the blemish.
But he didn’t stop at the physical medicine. He then taught her a specific, profound supplication (Dua) to recite over the blemish:
Ų§ŁŁŁŁŁŁŁ ŁŁ Ł ŁŲµŁŲŗŁŁŲ±Ł Ų§ŁŁŁŁŲØŁŁŲ±Ł Ų ŁŁŁ ŁŁŁŲØŁŁŲ±Ł Ų§ŁŲµŁŁŲŗŁŁŲ±Ł Ų ŲµŁŲŗŁŁŲ±Ł Ł ŁŲ§ ŲØŁŁ
“Allahumma musagghiral-kabir, wa mukabbiras-saghir, sagghir ma bi.”
“O Allah! The One who makes the big small, and makes the small big, make what is afflicting me small (eliminate it).”
The Spiritual Cure: Perspective is Everything
This beautiful Dua teaches us a massive lesson in Islamic wellness. A pimple might seem like a trivial issue, but turning to Allah for even the smallest of discomforts builds a constant connection with the Divine. By acknowledging that Allah is the One who controls the magnitude of all thingsācapable of shrinking massive problems and eliminating tiny blemishesāwe invite His healing into every aspect of our lives.
The Physical Cure: What is Dharirah?
The physical medicine the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) prescribed was Dharirah. In modern botanical terms, this is known as Sweet Flag (Acorus Calamus), an aromatic reed-like plant known in traditional Eastern medicine as Chhar or Qasab al-Dharirah.
Classical Islamic physicians deeply analyzed why the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) chose this specific plant for a skin breakout:
- The “Maturing” Effect: According to classical medicine, a pimple is the body’s natural way of pushing “hot, toxic matter” out of the system. Dharirah acts as a powerful drawing salve. It helps “cook” or mature the blemish, rapidly drawing the toxins out of the skin so the body can expel them completely.
- Cooling the Burn: Despite being an active astringent, it possesses a unique property that cools the burning, itching sensation often associated with inflamed boils or pimples.
- Stopping Bleeding: Ground Dharirah was also historically sprinkled on wounds to immediately stop bleeding due to its astringent nature.
- Aromatherapy: Unlike foul-smelling ointments, Dharirah has a naturally sweet, refreshing fragrance. Classical texts note that its beautiful scent actually “brings joy and freshness to the heart.”
The famous physician Avicenna (Ibn Sina) even noted in his masterwork, Al-Qanun, that mixing Dharirah with rose oil and vinegar makes for the ultimate soothing treatment for skin burns!

The next time you experience a breakout or a painful boil, try adopting this 1,400-year-old holistic routine. Treat the physical symptom with a natural, drawing astringent (like Sweet Flag, or natural clay and rosewater), but don’t forget the spiritual component.
