In modern times, we are constantly warned about the dangers of processed sugar, often referred to by nutritionists as a “sweet poison.” But centuries ago, classical Islamic Medicine (Tibb-e-Nabawi) had already drawn a distinct, massive boundary between the nutritional value of sugar and the miraculous healing properties of honey.
Let’s explore the classical perspective on Sugarcane (Qasab al-Sukkar), Unrefined Sugar (Khand), and the passionate defense classical physicians mounted in favor of pure honey.
Sugarcane: A Natural Sweetener and Medicine
While highly processed white sugar (Cheeni) is heavily criticized today, classical texts viewed natural Sugarcane (Qasab al-Sukkar) favorably when consumed in its raw form.
A famous Prophetic tradition regarding the Pond of Kauthar (in Paradise) states: “Its water is sweeter than sugar.” (Sahih Muslim).
In classical humoral medicine, sugarcane is classified as having a hot and wet temperament. Physicians recognized several benefits to chewing raw sugarcane:
- Respiratory Health: It was highly recommended for clearing coughs. It acts as an expectorant, clearing away thick moisture and phlegm from the lungs.
- Throat & Digestion: A classical scholar named Affan bin Muslim Safar famously stated: “A person who sucks sugarcane after eating food remains happy all day long.” Chewing the cane relieves dryness in the throat and chest and prevents flatulence (gas) from building up after a heavy meal.
(Classical tip: Always peel and wash sugarcane with hot water before chewing!)
Unrefined Sugar (Khand)
While ancient physicians did not have modern refined white sugar, they did have Khand (crystallized/unrefined rock sugar).
They categorized Khand as having a hot temperament. While it was considered a good sweet that could soothe a cough when boiled into a syrup, classical physicians warned that eating too much of it could harm the stomach by producing excess yellow bile (Safra).
The Classical Hack: If you consume too much sugar and feel a burning sensation in your stomach, classical medicine advises neutralizing it immediately by drinking lemon, orange, or pomegranate juice!
The Great Debate: Why Sugar is NOT Honey
During the classical era, a debate emerged. Because sugar is “softer” on the palate and has a slightly lower heat profile than honey, some people started arguing that Khand (sugar) was actually better for daily consumption than honey.
Classical physicians were absolutely outraged by this comparison. They viewed this claim as a dangerous prejudice against a Divinely prescribed cure.
They passionately argued that while sugar is merely a “food and a sweet,” Honey is a complex, miraculous medicine. They listed the undeniable medical miracles of honey that sugar could never replicate:
- It acts as a deep tissue healer: Honey pulls diseases out from the deep depths of the body, whereas sugar just sits in the stomach.
- It is antibacterial and anti-infectious: Honey stops putrefaction (decay) and cleanses the intestines of worms, whereas sugar can feed bacteria.
- It treats neurological coldness: Honey is a premier cure for “cold” neurological diseases like facial palsy, whereas sugar has no such effect.
- It is a universal preservative of health: For the elderly and those with weak, cold temperaments, honey preserves their core physical strength when all other medicines fail.
The Verdict
Centuries later, modern science has entirely validated the classical physicians. Modern white sugar is heavily linked to inflammation and countless metabolic diseases, while raw, pure honey is celebrated for its complex antioxidants, enzymes, and antibacterial properties.
The next time you need to sweeten a drink or a dish, skip the “sweet poison” of processed sugar and reach for the true, Prophetic cure: pure Honey!
