A Prophetic Lifestyle of Peace, Protection & Restoration
Sleep in Islam is not merely rest for the body—it is a spiritual practice when done according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The Sunnah way of sleeping combines duʿāʾ, remembrance (dhikr), cleanliness, posture, and intention, making sleep a source of healing, protection, and reward.
In Tibb-e-Nabawi, proper sleep restores the body, calms the heart, and prepares the soul for worship.
Sleep With the Right Intention (Niyyah)
Before sleeping, a believer intends:
To rest the body for worship
To regain strength for the next day
To place oneself under Allah’s protection
With intention, sleep becomes worship.
Sleep in a State of Purity (Wuḍūʼ)
The Prophet ﷺ advised:
“When you go to bed, perform wuḍūʼ as you do for prayer…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6311)
Sleeping with wuḍūʼ:
Protects from Shayṭān
Brings peace to the heart
Keeps one in remembrance of Allah
Even if wuḍūʼ is not obligatory, it is highly recommended (mustahabb).
Clean the Bed Before Sleeping
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you goes to his bed, let him dust it with the inside of his garment…”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, 5050)
This Sunnah:
Removes harm
Promotes cleanliness
Shows attention to safety and hygiene
The Sunnah Sleeping Position
The Prophet ﷺ loved to:
Sleep on the right side
Place the right hand under the cheek
Face the Qiblah when possible
This position:
Supports digestion
Benefits the heart
Calms the body
Sleeping on the stomach was discouraged by the Prophet ﷺ.
Duʿāʾ Before Sleeping
Duʿāʾ taught by the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
بِاسْمِكَ ٱللّٰهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Transliteration:
Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā
Meaning:
In Your Name, O Allah, I die and I live.
This duʿāʾ reminds us that sleep is a minor death, and awakening is a mercy.
Recite Qur’an & Dhikr Before Sleeping
From the Sunnah:
Recite Āyat al-Kursī (protection until morning)
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, An-Nās
Blow lightly into the hands and wipe over the body
The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned this practice.
Tasbīḥ, Taḥmīd & Takbīr Before Sleep
The Prophet ﷺ taught:
33 × SubḥānAllāh
33 × Al-ḥamdu lillāh
34 × Allāhu Akbar
This dhikr:
Brings peace
Strengthens the body
Is better than worldly comfort
Avoid Sleeping Immediately After Eating
From Tibb-e-Nabawi wisdom:
Sleeping immediately after heavy meals weakens digestion
A short gap before sleep preserves health
Moderation protects the body.
Sleep Early & Wake for Fajr
The Prophet ﷺ disliked:
Sleeping before ‘Ishāʼ (without need)
Talking excessively after ‘Ishāʼ
Early sleep:
Preserves health
Supports night worship
Makes waking for Fajr easier
Duʿāʾ Upon Waking Up
When the Prophet ﷺ woke up, he said:
Arabic:
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ ٱلَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ ٱلنُّشُورُ
Transliteration:
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi an-nushūr
Meaning:
All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.
Sunnah Sleep & Health
The Sunnah way of sleeping:
Improves heart health
Calms the nervous system
Reduces anxiety
Protects the soul
Prepares the body for worship
Modern science confirms this Prophetic balance.
Spiritual Reflection
Sunnah sleep teaches us:
To surrender control to Allah
To remember death daily
To begin and end the day with dhikr
A believer sleeps with Allah on the tongue and heart.
Conclusion
The Sunnah way of sleeping is a complete nightly routine combining purity, remembrance, duʿāʾ, posture, and discipline. By sleeping with wuḍūʼ, lying on the right side, reciting Qur’an, and placing our trust in Allah, even sleep becomes worship and protection.
Reviving this Sunnah revives peace, health, and faith.
