Duʿāʾ Before Starting a Journey

When mounting a vehicle (or beginning travel), the Prophet ﷺ used to say:

Arabic:
سُبْحَانَ ٱلَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ ۝ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

Transliteration:
Subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn

Meaning:
Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, though we could not have done so by ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return.

This duʿāʾ:

• Builds gratitude

• Reminds us of return to Allah

• Instills humility and dependence

The Sunnah Duʿāʾ for Traveling

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

Arabic (shortened):
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا ٱلْبِرَّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ…

Meaning:
O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness and piety…

This duʿāʾ asks Allah for:

• Ease in travel

• Protection from harm

• Acceptance of deeds

• Safe return

Travel in a State of Cleanliness

From the Sunnah:

• Perform wuḍūʼ before travel

• Pray two rakʿahs before leaving home

This places the journey under Allah’s protection.

Say Takbīr When Ascending & Tasbīḥ When Descending

The Prophet ﷺ would:

• Say Allāhu Akbar when going uphill

• Say SubḥānAllāh when going downhill

This practice keeps the tongue engaged in dhikr during travel.

Good Manners & Patience During Travel

The Sunnah teaches travelers to:

• Be patient

• Avoid arguments

• Help companions

• Speak gently

The Prophet ﷺ said that travel is a portion of hardship, which is why patience is rewarded.

Shortening & Combining Prayers

From Allah’s mercy:

• Travelers may shorten prayers (Qaṣr)

• Combine prayers when needed

This shows Islam’s concern for ease and well-being.

Duʿāʾ of the Traveler Is Accepted

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Three supplications are answered without doubt:
the supplication of the oppressed,
the supplication of the traveler,
and the supplication of a parent for their child.”

Avoid Prolonged Absence Without Need

From the Sunnah:

• Do not stay away from family longer than necessary

• Return home promptly after completing the task

Balance between duty and family is part of Sunnah.

Duʿāʾ Upon Returning Home

When the Prophet ﷺ returned, he would say:

Arabic:
آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Meaning:
We return, repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

This duʿāʾ expresses gratitude and humility.

Tibb-e-Nabawi & Health Wisdom

The Sunnah of traveling:
