Even a Thorn Prick: How the Small Troubles of Life Count
When we think about hardship in a spiritual sense, we usually think of the big things: serious illness, loss, major financial strain. The smaller frustrations, such as a headache, a stressful week, or a day of nagging worry, tend to get dismissed as just the noise of life. Islamic teaching offers a different view, and it is a surprisingly gentle one.
The Hadith
The Prophet ļ·ŗ taught that no fatigue, illness, worry, sadness, harm, or distress befalls a believer, not even a thorn that pricks them, except that Allah expiates some of their sins because of it.
Read that list again. It begins with the physical, such as fatigue and illness, moves through the emotional, such as worry and sadness, and ends with something as tiny as a thorn. The scope is deliberately wide. Nothing in that range is described as wasted.
What This Changes About Ordinary Difficulty
Most of us treat minor discomfort as pure loss: time wasted, mood ruined, energy drained. This teaching introduces another way of seeing it. Even in the moment when something feels merely irritating or tiresome, there may be something being cleared away that you cannot see.
This doesn’t mean you should enjoy hardship or pretend it doesn’t hurt. It means that the hurt is not pointless. It carries weight beyond the discomfort itself.
Why This Is Comforting
There is a particular kind of weariness that comes from feeling that your struggles don’t count, that they are too small to matter or that no one notices them. This hadith speaks directly to that feeling. Nothing is too small to be noticed. A passing worry or a tiring day is included in the same teaching as larger trials.
For someone going through a long, grinding season, the kind with no single dramatic event but a steady accumulation of little burdens, this can be a real source of relief. The ordinary heaviness of the days is not going to waste.
Holding This Without Misusing It
A few points of balance are worth keeping in mind:
- It isn’t a reason to seek out hardship. The teaching is about how to understand difficulty that comes, not an instruction to invite it.
- It doesn’t replace seeking relief. Taking medicine, resting, asking for help, and solving problems are all encouraged. Receiving the reward of a trial doesn’t mean refusing to address it.
- It isn’t a way to dismiss someone else’s pain. Telling a person in pain that “it’s expiating their sins” is rarely helpful. This is a source of comfort for you to hold for yourself, not a line to hand to someone else in the middle of their grief.
- It works best alongside patience. The teaching sits comfortably with everything else in this series about responding well to what we cannot control.
A Few Ways to Apply It
- Pause on small troubles. When something minor goes wrong, quietly remind yourself of this hadith. It takes a few seconds and can shift the feeling.
- Say “Alhamdulillah” even for the small ones. It doesn’t have to be reserved for large blessings or large trials.
- Notice the pattern of your own week. Looking back, you may find that many of the things you resented were part of something larger than they seemed.
Nothing Wasted
The most reassuring part of this teaching is its simplicity. You don’t need to endure something dramatic for it to matter. The tiredness, the worry, the small sting of an ordinary day, all of it is seen, and none of it is thrown away. In a season where it can feel like effort is going unnoticed, that is a quiet but real comfort.
