With Hardship Comes Ease: A Promise Said Twice
Most of us can name the moment when a hard season felt as though it would never end. The days blur together, and the idea of relief becomes abstract, something other people experience. Islamic teaching meets that feeling with one of the most direct promises in the Qur’an, and it says it twice.
The Promise
In Surah ash-Sharh, Allah states, in meaning: indeed, with hardship comes ease. Then, in the very next verse, He repeats it: indeed, with hardship comes ease.
The repetition is not accidental filler. It is emphasis. The same reassurance is delivered twice in a row, as though Allah wants it to land. For anyone who has ever felt too tired to believe that things could change, the verse is a double knock on the door.
Notice the Word “With”
A small detail in the wording is worth noticing. The verse does not say that ease comes after hardship, as if relief were stored somewhere far off, waiting for the difficulty to finish. It says ease comes with hardship.
This suggests that ease is not only a distant reward. Even inside a hard season, there are often small mercies already present: a supportive person, a moment of calm, a door that opens slightly, a strength you did not expect to have. The promise invites you to look for them, rather than waiting until the whole difficulty has passed.
A Point Scholars Have Drawn From the Wording
Classical scholars have observed something about the Arabic of these verses. The word for “hardship” appears with the definite article both times, which points to the same hardship being referred to. The word for “ease” appears without it each time, which suggests two distinct instances of ease.
From this, a well-known saying has been reported: one hardship will never overcome two eases. The idea is that the balance of the promise is tilted toward relief. A single difficulty is, in a sense, outnumbered.
You don’t need to know Arabic to appreciate the point. It is a reminder that the verse is not merely consoling in tone but carefully constructed to emphasize that relief is the larger share.
Why This Matters in Practice
The promise does not mean hardship is unreal or that you should be cheerful about it. It means that the difficulty, however heavy, is not the whole story and is not the final word. A few ways this can shape how you carry a hard season:
- Look for the “with.” Instead of waiting for the end of the difficulty, notice what is already present alongside it, even if it is small.
- Treat hope as an act of trust. Believing in the promise, even when you can’t yet see its fulfillment, is part of the patience this series has been exploring.
- Resist the sense that the present is permanent. The promise is spoken precisely to people who feel stuck. Allah knows the feeling and answers it directly.
- Keep acting. The surah itself moves straight on to a call to keep striving and to turn toward Allah once a task is done. Hope is meant to energize, not to excuse standing still.
Holding On Between the Two Verses
There is something quietly moving about the structure of this passage. In the space between the first statement of the promise and its repetition, there is room for a person to catch their breath and take it in. If you are in the middle of a hard stretch, you can treat that pause as your own: the promise has been made, and it has been made again.
You may not know when or how the ease will arrive. But the Qur’an does not hedge on whether it is coming. It says it plainly, and it says it twice.
