Tag Archives: Islamic teachings on resentment

Some of the heaviest things we carry through difficult seasons are not the losses themselves, but the resentments that grow alongside them: against someone who hurt us, someone who let us down, someone who said the wrong thing at the wrong moment. These feelings rarely announce themselves as burdens. They simply sit in the background, quietly using up energy that could have gone toward healing.

Islamic teaching takes this seriously, and it offers a striking picture of what it looks like to put the weight down.

The Man Promised Paradise

There is a well-known narration about a man whom the Prophet ﷺ described on three separate occasions as being among the people of Paradise. One of the companions, curious about what made him so special, stayed with him for a few days to observe. He did not find extraordinary amounts of voluntary worship. When he finally asked the man directly, the answer was simple: he did not go to bed harboring ill feeling toward any Muslim, and he did not envy anyone for what Allah had given them.

The companion’s response was telling: this, he said, is what had carried the man so far.

What stands out is how ordinary the practice is. It is not a dramatic feat. It is a nightly clearing of the heart.

Why Resentment Is So Heavy

Holding a grudge can feel like a way of protecting yourself or keeping a record of wrongs. In practice, it tends to do the opposite. The resentment is replayed again and again, and the person carrying it is usually the one who suffers most from it. Meanwhile the person it is directed at may not even be aware of it.

In the context of grief and hardship, this matters even more. A heart already stretched by loss has little room to spare. Bitterness takes up space that patience, gratitude, and trust could otherwise occupy.

A Quranic Invitation

The Qur’an offers a gentle framing of forgiveness that is worth noticing. In a passage encouraging believers to pardon and overlook, Allah asks, in meaning: would you not love for Allah to forgive you? The question ties forgiveness toward others to our own hope for forgiveness. It reframes letting go not as a loss, but as an investment in something we all need.

What Letting Go Does and Doesn’t Mean

It helps to be clear about what this teaching is not asking.

• It doesn’t mean pretending you weren’t hurt. Acknowledging the hurt is honest and necessary.
• It doesn’t require reconciling with everyone. Letting go of resentment is not the same as restoring trust or staying close to someone who harmed you.
• It doesn’t have to happen all at once. For deeper wounds, it is often a gradual process.

What it does mean is refusing to keep the injury alive inside your heart as a permanent resident.

A Few Practical Steps

• Make a nightly habit of it. Before sleep, take a moment to notice whether you are carrying anything against anyone, and consciously set it down.
• Pray for the person. It sounds hard, but making a sincere dua for someone you resent tends to soften the feeling over time.
• Remember your own need for forgiveness. Reflecting on how much you hope to be forgiven makes it easier to extend that mercy.
• Give it time, but don’t give it a home. You can take as long as you need to heal while still deciding not to nurture the grudge.

Lightness as Its Own Reward

There is a particular lightness that comes from going to sleep with a clean heart. It does not erase the hardship of the day, but it removes one of the heaviest layers of it. In a season already full of weight, putting down the burdens we are free to put down is one of the kindest things we can do for ourselves.
