Ending the Day Well: A Prophetic Bedtime Routine for a Restless Mind
For many people, the hardest part of a difficult season is not the day but the night. Once the distractions fade and the room goes quiet, the mind starts replaying everything: what happened, what might happen, what can’t be fixed. Falling asleep can feel like a negotiation with your own thoughts.
The Prophetic tradition offers something simple and practical for this moment: a short routine for the end of the day, built from acts the Prophet ļ·ŗ himself practiced.
Why a Routine Helps
A routine does something that willpower alone often can’t. It gives the mind a clear, familiar path from the activity of the day to rest. Instead of lying down and hoping the worries will stop on their own, you walk through a few steps that signal the day is complete and hand what remains over to Allah.
The Prophetic bedtime practices are short by design. They are meant to be doable on an ordinary night, including a tired one.
The Core Practices
1. Begin with wudu. The Prophet ļ·ŗ encouraged going to bed in a state of purity. Making wudu before sleep is a small physical act that marks a clean transition from the day to the night.
2. Recite Ayat al-Kursi. It is narrated that whoever recites this verse when going to bed will have a protector from Allah through the night. Its themes, Allah as the Ever-Living and Self-Sustaining, connect naturally to the way many people feel when they are anxious and need something steady to hold on to.
3. Recite the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah. The Prophet ļ·ŗ taught that these two verses are sufficient for whoever recites them at night. They end with a humble supplication that fits the end of a long day: Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
4. Recite the three short surahs. It is narrated that the Prophet ļ·ŗ would cup his hands, blow lightly into them after reciting Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and an-Nas, and wipe over his body as far as he could reach, beginning with the head and face. He did this three times.
5. Lie on your right side and make the closing dua. The Prophet ļ·ŗ would place his right hand under his cheek and say, in meaning: “In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.” On waking, he would say that praise belongs to Allah who gave us life after causing us to die.
What This Does for a Troubled Mind
Without making any claims beyond what the teachings themselves say, we can notice what the routine does in practice:
- It hands over the day. Each step is a way of placing your worries in Allah’s care before you close your eyes.
- It gives the mind something to do. Reciting familiar words occupies the same space that anxious thoughts would otherwise fill.
- It frames sleep as trust. The closing dua treats sleep as a small, daily act of surrender, which echoes the trust in Allah that runs through so many of the themes in this series.
Keeping It Realistic
You don’t need to do all of it perfectly from the first night.
- Start with one or two. Ayat al-Kursi and the closing dua are a very manageable place to begin.
- Build gradually. Add another practice once the first feels natural.
- Be patient with the mind. On a hard night, thoughts will still wander. Returning to the words, again and again, is part of the practice.
- Don’t treat it as a guarantee of instant calm. It is a habit that builds a different relationship with the night over time.
A Quieter End to the Day
You can’t control everything that happens between morning and night. But you can choose how the day ends. A few minutes of remembrance, spoken in the dark, turns the hours when worry is loudest into a time of quiet trust, and it hands the night over to the One who never sleeps.
