Your Body Has a Right Over You: Balance in the Prophetic Way
When people go through a hard season, they often respond in one of two ways. Some neglect themselves completely, skipping meals, sleeping badly, and pushing through exhaustion as if their body were an obstacle. Others, seeking spiritual relief, swing the opposite direction and pour everything into worship while ignoring physical needs. Islamic teaching names a better path, and it comes from a short, memorable exchange between two companions.
The Story of Salman and Abu Darda
Salman al-Farisi once visited his companion Abu Darda and found him in a condition that worried him. Abu Darda was devoting himself so fully to worship that he was neglecting his family and his own comfort. Salman gently corrected him and said, in meaning: your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you, so give each its due.
When this was reported to the Prophet ļ·ŗ, he confirmed it, saying that Salman had spoken the truth.
That moment is easy to read past, but it carries a weighty point. The Prophet ļ·ŗ affirmed that caring for the body is part of fulfilling one’s duties, not a distraction from them.
Why This Matters in Hard Times
Grief and stress have a way of upsetting the basics. Sleep gets disrupted, meals become irregular, and physical activity drops away. It is common to feel that attending to such things is trivial compared with what is going on inside.
This teaching offers a different frame. The body is described as something entrusted to you, and looking after it is part of looking after your wellbeing as a whole. When a person is worn down physically, patience, focus, and the ability to engage in worship properly all tend to suffer. Taking care of the body is therefore not in competition with spiritual life. It supports it.
Balance as a Prophetic Quality
This is one example of a wider Prophetic pattern. The tradition consistently warns against extremes, whether that means harsh self-denial or careless indulgence. The Prophet ļ·ŗ himself prayed at night, but also slept. He fasted, but also broke his fast. He lived a life of devotion, and he also lived among his family, ate, rested, and took care of his responsibilities.
The takeaway is that a good life is not built by pushing one dimension to its limit. It is built by giving each part its proper share.
A Few Ways to Apply This
- Keep the basics steady during hard seasons. Regular meals, reasonable sleep, and some movement are not luxuries. They are part of weathering difficulty well.
- Don’t treat self-care as selfishness. If the body has a right over you, meeting that right is an act of responsibility.
- Match your spiritual effort to what is sustainable. Consistent, moderate worship tends to hold up better than bursts of intensity that leave you depleted.
- Notice when exhaustion is driving your mood. Sometimes what feels like pure spiritual heaviness is partly tiredness, and rest is a legitimate part of the remedy.
A Whole-Person Approach
The Prophetic approach to difficulty does not ask a person to be only a heart, or only a body. It treats a human being as a whole: a soul that needs nourishment through prayer, remembrance, and trust, and a body that needs rest, food, and care. When both are tended to, a person is better able to carry whatever the season brings.
